How ENUM works
ENUM is a technology that matches telephone numbers to internet addresses. ENUM uses existing and proven internet technologies, like distributed DNS databases, to route calls via the internet to the requested destination.
ENUM unifies traditional telephony and next-generation IP networks, and provides a critical framework for mapping and processing diverse network addresses. It transforms the telephone number, the most basic and commonly used communications address, into a universal identifier that can be used across many different devices and applications (voice, fax, mobile, email, text messaging, location-based services and the Internet).
In general, ENUM is a protocol that defines a method to convert a regular telephone number (e.g. for MIXvoip +352 20 50 70 90) into a format that can be used on the Internet within the Domain Name System (DNS) to look up Internet addressing information such as Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs).
About e164.org
e164.org is a public enum directory of telephone numbers that can be reached over the Internet by anyone anywhere! The system works by publishing a DNS zone, 'e164.org', that can be used by various Internet applications. Their mission is to provide a sustainable, verified registry of telephone numbers for dialing on the Internet using Voice over IP, Email, Instant Messaging and other communication protocols.
e164.org is not affiliated with e164.arpa. They are an independent registry that recognized a need to faciliate the adoption of Voice over IP, and thus they offer our service to the public at large by validating telephone numbers and allowing number owners to determine how Internet communication protocols should interoperate against their phone number.
